Keelboat Race Week Launched

Open to all junior sailors in the country, but aimed at Transition Year students in particular, we are pleased to announce that the 15-19 and 22-26 of September will be KeelBoat RaceWeek at Heir Island Sailing School.

From one of the most stunning sailing areas in Ireland, two weeklong courses of intense Keel Boat racing and training, specifically for Transition Year Sailors  keen to broaden their sailing and racing experience.

A team of expert coaches, as well as 6 Matched open keelboats will provide the perfect environment for learning and developing the key skills associated with racing keelboats including main and headsail trim, bow work, helming, tactics and spinnaker handling.

At the end of the course sailors will have gained familiarity with the various roles on keel boats as well as gaining an appreciation for the tactics and strategy used throughout big boat races. Crucially they will also learn how to adapt the dinghy approach to bigger, more powerful boats.

Coaches:
Ben Fusco: Currently Head Coach at the Royal St George Yacht Club, Ben is also an active member of UCD Sailing Club. An ex student yachting world champion, Ben will be representing Ireland Universities for the third consecutive year in France this october. He has a large amount of experience racing a variety of keelboats at European and World level including 1720s, SB20s, Dragons and Squibs.

Ben Lynch: A committed and talented offshore sailor, Ben is most often seen aboard a variety of Volvo Open 70s, competing in some of the worlds most challenging offshore races. An ex member of the ISA academy in the Laser, and latterly a campaigner in the 49er, Ben has been coaching extensively over the last couple of years in his trademark calm and deliberate style.
