The Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) held its annual Conference at the Royal Irish Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire on 10 th February.

The conference was well attended, with members and club representatives travelling from all sides of the country.

The second keynote speakers at the conference were Cian McCarthy & Sam Hunt from Kinsale YC.

They outlined their recent experience competing in the double handed class of the Sydney-Hobart race, on the chartered Sunfast 3300 called Cinnamon Girl Eden Capital. Cian & Sam displayed some superb video footage along with photos from the race, as part of their presentation. The video footage clearly showed the challenging conditions they experienced during the race. The race was tough, with lots of water leaking though the deck hatch, resulting in loss of electronics. Wind and sea conditions required plenty of reefing.

Cian & Sam summarised the advantages and disadvantages of double handed racing, and outlined how they manage navigation, manoeuvres, hoists, drops, etc. with only the two of them on board.

They stressed the importance of good planning and preparation as well as regular training, in order for crews to achieve good race results. Learning from experience is essential.

ICRA wishes to congratulate Cian & Sam on their success in the Sydney-Hobart race and to thank them for their excellent contribution to this year’s conference.
